CHAPPUY, Nicolas Ausgustin Born circa. 1730 Mirecourt, died 1784 Paris France. Trained in Mirecourt and active in Paris from c.1750. Prolific, but a wide range of qualities characteristic of both the Mirecourt and ‘vieux Paris’ schools. Generally flat-arched with large scrolls, sometimes ornately carved. Materials usually of the plainer sort, but good figured maple occasionally used. Fairly hard yellow varnish prone to chipping, but other colours and qualities seen. Like his contemporaries, he is also known for some very fine viola d’amores, quintons, and pochettes. Brand beneath endpin or back button: ‘N. Chappuy à Paris’.
