James Hardie (1836-1916) famous Scottish violin maker and also noteworthy figures in English violin making. His great productivity of his life’s work includes over 2,000 instruments. The approximately 200 violins he patterned after the Maggini model are widely considered among his best works, and the Maggini replica offered here features its original label which is dated 1896 and reads “James Hardie & Sons, Edinburgh.” This interesting Scottish violin is a rather large pattern violin with oil varnish of an dark amber with beautiful spruce top and flamed maple back.   This violin has an wonderful antique character with its slight crackling and  historic patina.
